Student Center Evacuation

By: Katherine Milsop

Montclair State University administration ordered the evacuation the Student Center yesterday around 6 p.m. due to an electrical problem that shorted out lights and air conditioning throughout the building.

According to Lt. Kiernan Barrett, the electrical failure was apparently caused by a blown fuse in the main electrical switch in the lower level of the building.

“When power is out in such a heavily occupied building it becomes necessary to evaluate the safety of those within and also allow those that need to perform necessary repairs the opportunity to quickly work on the problem,” Barrett said.

While the doors were locked, groups of students and faculty held meetings for clubs and organizations on the front patio facing the quad.

The Student Center officially reopened today at 7 a.m.
