It's a new program that combines hands-on and online support for those challenged with eating disorder behaviors and distorted body images.

The goal is to provide newfound nationwide support for communities in the months and years to come.

It's called EDENprocess.com and was launched September, 2003. The site is a joint effort between The Life Enrichment Center (LEC) of Lawrence, Kansas and the Eating Disorder & Education Network (EDEN) of Michigan.

The EDEN Process is a Recovery Skills Program that helps people overcome disordered eating patterns and eating disorder behaviors by guiding them through a recovery process, helping to set and achieve goals and teaching them healthy coping skills.

The EDEN Processes are designed to be part of a community-based solution that focuses on building recovery skills that encourage individual processes and offer a great deal of peer and professional support.

EDEN Processes empower the individual to take responsibility and action for their recovery, are theoretically based (Prochaska's Transtheoretical Behavioral Change Model) and are cost-effective.  EDEN programs are complementary to outpatient treatment options, improve outcomes and can be used pre-treatment, collateral with treatment or post-treatment.

The EDENprocess.com site also focuses on compulsive overeaters, weight and body image issues.  In addition to the online EDEN Process Recovery Skills Program, edenprocess.com will include discussion boards, chat rooms and even a "No Diet Zone" with a program called, Eating From the Inside Out, which helps one use internal wisdom to manage weight, not external orders from a diet or diet guru.

As of the September, 2003 launch, the EDEN Process community-based programs are currently in Michigan, Hawaii, Kansas, Minnesota, Florida, Colorado, and soon New York and California.

The goal is to expand the services and support to communities throughout the U.S. The purpose of the online option of EDEN Processes is that traditional eating disorder recovery support may not be available in their area.

The goal is to have EDEN Programs in communities nationwide with trained facilitators and an outpatient treatment team in place in each locale.

Until those individual community programs are set up, the web-based program can help assist those individuals in outpatient treatment settings with additional support and programming.

"In my 15 years of experience with eating disorder clients, I have learned that the amount of impact a therapist can have is totally dependent on the amount of additional support from other professionals and the community," says LEC Co-Director Ed Bloch.

"For the last 7 years I have been actively involved in developing alternative solutions to inpatient and residential treatment for anorexia and bulimia, diet approaches and radical surgeries for compulsive overeaters and obesity. When I found Eating Disorder Education Networkand its EDEN Recovery Skills Program I new it was a match."
