On Tuesday, a rally was held in front of the Red Hawk Parking Deck at 2:30 p.m. The rally, which was organized by Sophomore Josh Weinstein, was held to raise people's awareness of the parking conditions at MSU.
Weinstein is a Resident Assistant at Freeman Hall who organized the rally but said, "this event is not sponsored nor endorsed by Residence Life."
Weinstein also said that the group does not really have any demands that they wish to have taken care of, but instead, the group has a number of ideas that they feel should be listened to in order to alleviate the parking situation.
One idea is to stop allowing freshmen residents to keep cars on campus as other universities do. Freshmen commuters would not be affected by this act.
According to Weinstein, "Other suggestions are reducing parking fine amounts, reducing the amount of time an appeal takes, and better coordinating shuttle service."
Along with the problem of students not being able to park, there is the problem of faculty being unable to find parking. When students are left with cancelled classes, a great deal of subject matter is taught in a shorter period of time.
The group has been in touch with the teacher's union, the SGA, and various individuals to get their message across. Weinstein said, "While I have been coordinating it [the rally] personally, it is not without some help from Jacob Hudnut and several outside sources."
Finally, Weinstein said that although individuals complain to the parking services and write letters, the complaints would be taken care of more effectively due to the fact that there is strength in numbers. In order to gain that support, the rally was advertised and supporters were asked to attend.
Adjunct professors were present during the rally due to the fact that their requests from their November demonstration were not yet negotiated. The professors complained that their contracts stated that they were guaranteed parking and were then forced to pay the Red Hawk Deck fee.
