A Perfect Circle Strikes Again

Sophomore Release for Artistic Band Another Masterpiece

Issue date: 1/29/04 Section: Arts and Entertainment
It's comforting to listen to an album whose anticipated release was much more than expected. Much more in a good way, not like a depressing Metallica way.
A Perfect Circle is one of those bands. With the release of their follow-up to , Mer De Noms, The Thirteenth Step, still satiates the senses and satisfies the ears.
The opening song, "The Package" still keeps to the soothing sounds that A Perfect Circle is known for. Singer, Maynard James Keenan out does himself on the track, "Weak and Powerless" which is their first single to hit radio, and serves as an introduction to the beautiful flow of the rest of the album.
"The Noose" is a typical title that the band would name a song, however, this particular track is a bit faster paced than other songs.
"Blue" begins with the signature guitar lick that makes A Perfect Circle the eccentric band they are. Even the track sounds like it belongs on Mer De Noms.
That is one trait that I deeply admire the band for. Their sound does not change after one album.
Maynard was quoted as saying that he did some soul searching for this album, which is generally a kiss of death for a band. In this case, it's the opposite.
He went above and beyond fans' expectations and although their music is slower than their previous album, they still remained true to their roots which is hard to come by rnowadays.
"A stranger" is complete with violins and the lulling voice of Keenan with an introduction of the wind blowing. It's ironic, how the next track, "The Outsider" can be so midly heavy with a Tool-esque vibe.
Then again, A Perfect Circle is full of irony, which is the beauty of the side project.
They are one of the handful of bands that are allowed to get away with being relaxing in one song and screaming in another.
This is a band all should bow down to in respect. "Crimes" is the only track that is worth skipping only because it's nothing really worth listening to. There is a beat and a melody within, however it leads to nowhere.
