Issue date: 9/30/04 Section: News
An annual bill to enact an advisor to the Greek Council failed to pass last Tuesday at a Greek Council meeting.

Hayden Greene, advisor to the Greek and Social Fellowships, was up for the same position he has held for the past three years, but the bill failed to attain the two-thirds majority vote necessary to pass.

"I was unaware it would be voted down," said Lauren Parisi, president of Greek Council. "I thought it would pass."

The Greek community is reportedly unsatisfied with Greene as their advisor for the Greek Council. According to Brian Lubliner, President of Delta Chi and nominee for Greek Council treasurer, Greene has not lived up to his organization's expectations of what an advisor should be.
Lubliner described an advisor as "someone who aids [your organization] in getting accomplished what we want."

As stated in the Statutes of the Greek Council at Montclair State University, a Greek Advisor is a "non-voting member of the Greek Council...who is to be paid by MSU administration and the SGA."
According to Heather Uptegrove, Attorney General of the SGA, the position of advisor to Greek Council is separate from the advisor to the Greek and Social Fellowship community.

As Greek Council advisor, Greene was also responsible for training the executive board, making rules and enforcing them, SGA President Jacob Hudnut said.

According to the job description of the Advisor for the Fraternities and Sororities, this person's duties and responsibilities are to "counsel students on matters related to fraternities and sororities" as well as "facilitate Fraternity and Sorority compliance with University's policies, procedures and regulations."

The job description, however, also says the individual is to "serve as advisor to student organizations and Greek Council."

According to Parisi and Uptegrove, the Greek and Social Fellowship organizations are still able to function without an advisor for Greek Council, however, Greek Council is unable to hold meetings unless the president calls for an emergency meeting.
