Since The Sports Guy last graced his sportlings' presence, Roger Clemens won his seventh Cy Young Award, Derek Jeter won his first Gold Glove Award, and there have been two undefeated teams sent home with their first loss. Let's not forget about the Strahans season ending injury, or the start of basketball season. The Sports Guy says that things are just as busy in sports as the Republicans were in Ohio.
The Red Hawks have something to cheer about. The women's soccer team is the conference champion for the first time in team history, and The Sports Guy says they deserve all the credit in the world. They were 5-7-1 after being shutout by Stephens Tech on Oct. 14. Since then, they have gone unbeaten, and have been nothing short of magnificent.
It's been said that defense wins championships. If that's the case, then The Sports Guy says that Messiah, and every other team that comes in the path of the Lady Hawks, will have trouble with a capital T on their hands. Since their last loss, they allowed just two goals in seven games.
But defense is nothing new for the team that hasn't allowed more than two goals any game this season, with 10 shutouts to boot. The Sports Guy says that it was the increased offensive production in the last seven games - they scored two or more goals five times. They only reached or eclipsed two goals three times previously.
The 11-7-3 Red Hawks will be facing Messiah on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA playoffs, and will have their hands full with the undefeated Falcons at Pittser Field. Messiah has only given up five goals all season, and MSU is already a team that ranks near the bottom of the NJAC in nearly every offensive category.
The Sports Guy hates to be wrong, but the Red Hawk Field Hockey team proved him so this time. He thought they'd be a cinch to win the conference. As of Oct. 20, they were 12-2 and undefeated in the conference. Sitting at the top of the conference, all they needed was a victory at TCNJ to reach the NCAA Playoffs for the second season in a row, and to keep the dream season alive.
